July 16 Moth Night on Sandy Hook
In partnership with the Sandy Hook Foundation, join us on Thursday, July 16 from 8-11 pm for our Moth Night on Sandy Hook!
Celebrate National Moth Week Beachy Birder style and learn about these incredible nocturnal creatures! We will join moth expert Blaine Rothauser, Senior Ecologist, GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc., for a hands-on, interactive session.
We will observe the process of identifying moths, while also learning why they are important to our environment and what you can do to support moths found in New Jersey.
This event will provide a ton of opportunities to ask questions and to be guided through your own discoveries. Whether you are brand new to the world of moths or have an already established love for them, this session is for you.
Dress for the weather and bring a headlamp or flashlight. Bring a camera to take some awesome close-up shots! You will be surprised by their individual and breathtaking features.
Birding is for everyone. All are welcome on our friendly and respectful Beachy Birder Adventures!
We will meet at Fishing Beach (End of Area F Road) of Gateway National Recreation Area, Sandy Hook. We will hang out on the paved road. Please dress for the weather, wear closed-toe shoes, bring water, snacks, a hat and binoculars if you have them. We have 10 pairs of 8×25 birding binoculars for you to borrow as needed, and we will have a spotting scope to look through as well.
Our outings are rain or shine but in the event of extreme weather we will reschedule for a more enjoyable experience. Let’s get mothy!

The Sandy Hook Foundation is the official friends group to the National Park Service at Sandy Hook, New Jersey, a unit of Gateway National Recreation Area. Established in 1989, the Foundation has funded cultural, educational, environmental, and conservation programs and has helped restore and preserve historic structures of the Sandy Hook Lighthouse and Fort Hancock — both National Historic Landmarks.
Our purpose is to lead guided bird walks throughout New Jersey, encouraging all to appreciate the beauty and wonder of nature. Beachy Birder Adventures gives everyone a chance to be curious, learn and discover something new. Our walks are low key and meant for the bird curious. We slow-bird. We look to meet people where they are through lighthearted humor.
